delfort invests in new pressboard machine to expand its portfolio of insulation materials for the transformer industry

delfort, a global manufacturer of specialty papers, today announced an investment into new pressboard capacity for electrical insulation applications. A new machine, to be installed at the Tervakoski site in Finland, is scheduled to start operations in the course of 2027.

For more than 100 years, delfort has been a trusted partner to transformer manufacturers worldwide, providing proven electrical insulation expertise and a dependable, long‑term supply platform that supports both production continuity and customer growth. The recent investment supports the request of the global electrical insulation material demand.

Transformer manufacturers are expanding capacity to support both new grid buildouts and the replacement of aging infrastructure, further increasing demand for critical transformer components.

“This investment is a long-term commitment to the global energy sector and to the global energy transition,” says Christopher Diesen, Executive Managing Director at delfort Tervakoski, “With this new production line, we are expanding our portfolio and further supporting the industry's growth by creating additional pressboard capacity.” The investment is expected to strengthen the local economy and create new employment opportunities at the Tervakoski site. At the same time, delfort’s expansion supports global supply resilience, enabling customers to benefit from greater availability, reliable delivery, and faster realization of transformer and grid expansion projects.

Pressboard enables high voltage transformer performance

Fiber‑based pressboard both insulates and stabilizes critical components in power transformers, making sure the transformer operates safely, reliably and over a long service lifetime. “Its ability to withstand high voltage, combined with mechanical strength and long‑term compatibility with transformer oils, ensures predictable performance over decades,” Diesen added. “This results in reliable transformer operation and longer service life with reduced maintenance requirements.”

The new pressboard machine is fully compatible with the site’s recent investment into a new power plant, enabling the production of pressboard without fossil energy. With electrified steam production and the use of industrial waste heat at the Tervakoski site, delfort can significantly reduce the mill’s CO₂ footprint.
