4 proven steps to get paper packaging market-ready

From prototype to market, we help our clients transition to sustainable1 paper packaging, accelerating new packaging developments along with R&D partner delsci2. Our knowledge and expertise in transforming a visionary paper mock-up into a scalable industrially viable product is key in supporting our clients as they switch to flexible paper packaging. As a leading specialty paper producer and development partner, we accelerate the path from concept to full-scale production3, enabling our clients to quickly bring customized packaging solutions to market.

The considerations are diverse when it comes to upscaling new barrier paper grades from small scale to industrial scale. We have developed the teams, processes and equipment necessary to take packaging from idea to shelf4.  Our approach integrates research and development, prototyping, validation, production and industrial converting seamlessly. The transition to an industrial scale is crucial for the success of a new barrier paper, and we leverage our unique innovations, expertise and strategic collaborations to bring new paper solutions to the shelves for customers globally.

The transformation from hard-to-recycle flexible packaging to recyclable paper packaging imposes big technical challenges for all industry players in the packaging value chain. This means product development in a VUCA environment (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous). With so many new materials, requirements and regulations out there, the packing landscape can be intimidating for many.

4 key stops along the road to packaging success

Let us take the wheel, with you in the passenger seat, as we navigate the journey to functional and recyclable paper packaging. With our knowledge of the roads and potential roadblocks, we help ensure a smooth journey, navigating the best path together.

shelf-life testing capabilities in house

1. finding the right crew for the journey

For us, collaboration is key at the front and back end of our development process. We collaborate closely with over 100 external partners including chemical suppliers, OEMs, packaging converters, printers, brand owners, nutritional science institutes, educational organizations and regulatory agencies. This co-development approach drives innovation and reduces risks, helping us effectively manage the transformation to recyclable paper packaging.

2. navigating the best route together

It all starts with an idea! From early on, we involve our customers in the development process, including them throughout the process to ensure the final product meets their needs. In parallel, our knowledgeable and dedicated regulatory team checks for all necessary compliance topics (FDA, BfR, recyclability, compostability, migration, etc.) and issues the required documents with certification partners.

3. stopping along the way to test and improve

Maintaining in-house product development provides significant strategic and operational advantages. These benefit our customers in terms of faster time-to-market, consistency, quality, customization and alignment. Using our state-of-the-art laboratories and prototyping facilities we can test, develop and scale new papers in-house, allowing for immediate feedback and quicker resolution of issues. Additionally, in-house testing allows for better control over the testing procedure and outcomes and leads to better collaboration and more coherent product development.

New barrier papers undergo testing both internally and with external partners and customers. We conduct and oversee tests for convertibility, printability, recyclability and runnability on industrial packaging lines, as well as shelf-life tests to ensure product safety and longevity.
