PFAS-free: quality, safety and performance

Known for their durability and resistance to water and grease, PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have become a staple in the packaging industry. Yet the very characteristics that make PFAS so effective also render them highly persistent in both the environment and the human body. Choosing packaging without these chemicals is not just a trend, it's a critical step towards protecting both human health and the planet. Thanks to our commitment to quality, safety and performance all our packaging papers are free from intentionally added PFAS.

what is PFAS?

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of human-made chemicals widely used for their water-resistant, grease-resistant, and stain-resistant properties. They’re often referred to as "forever chemicals" because they do not break down easily in the environment and can persist for a long time. PFAS have been commonly used in various consumer products like non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, firefighting foams and products that resist grease, water, and oil such as food packaging1.

With increasing awareness of the risks associated with PFAS, the urgency to remove these chemicals from packaging materials is growing. Many retailers have voluntarily phased out the use of PFAS especially in food packaging for good reasons.

negative effects of PFAS: How PFAS affects us and the planet

  • regulatory pressure

Many governments are introducing stricter regulations and outright bans on PFAS in food packaging. The EU has taken steps to restrict the sale and use of PFAS in food packaging with an existing and valid ban2 and the FDA has announced that PFAS are no longer to be sold or used in food packaging3.

  • health concerns

PFAS chemicals have been linked to serious health issues. Studies suggest links between PFAS exposure and health risks such as liver damage, thyroid disease, obesity, fertility issues and cancer4. Companies are under pressure to remove these potentially harmful substances to protect consumers’ health.

  • environmental impact

PFAS are known as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily and persist in the environment. PFAS are challenging to break down due to their unique chemical structure, particularly the strong carbon-fluorine bonds. PFAS resists dissolving in both water and fats5.

the clock is ticking: don’t wait to go PFAS-free

We are leading the commitment within the packaging industry to develop safe and recyclable solutions for food packaging while meeting consumer demands and regulatory requirements. For more than a decade, we’ve invested in the expertise and technology needed to create high-quality, PFAS-free packaging papers, ensuring brands can make this essential transition without compromising on performance. Because of early investments and forward-thinking solutions, we have a full range of functional packaging papers for the food and QSR market that perform without the use of forever chemicals.

Adopting PFAS-free packaging before it’s required shows forward-thinking leadership and allows companies to leverage the many advantages of early compliance.

safety and functionality without compromising on quality

PFAS-free alternatives

Since we began producing food packaging papers in 2009 our aim has always been to develop packaging papers that are functional while being safe for people and the environment. This includes avoiding chemicals like PFAS and designing papers that are recyclable and/or compostable.

the perfect interplay between paper and barrier

The secret to our functional PFAS-free packaging papers lies in the perfect balance between fiber combinations, paper formulations and barriers. This has resulted in packaging papers that maintain high performance without the use of harmful chemicals. We focus on enhancing the physical and barrier properties of paper, making it suitable for various food packaging applications.

enhanced processing techniques

We use new processing techniques to modify the surface of paper to improve its barrier properties. These methods create a more durable product that can withstand the demands of food packaging without the need for harmful chemicals.

natural additives and fillers and barriers

We incorporate natural additives, such as biopolymers, starches, and biowaxes, into paper and barrier coating formulations to enhance their performance. These materials not only improve the paper’s resistance to oils and moisture but also contribute to its overall recyclability.

recyclable and compostable barrier papers

PFAS chemicals are persistent and resist degradation, making them challenging to recycle and compost. Our papers are designed to be recyclable and/or compostable. With a range of options, our papers are suitable for a wide range of food packaging needs.
