Ever wonder why the grease of your juicy burger doesn’t leak through the wrapper? Often, it’s thanks to fluorochemicals, so-called PFAS; chemicals that are used to make materials grease-resistant. Lately, the public and legislators have been taking a closer look at PFAS and find it’s not always necessary. New legislation and restrictions on PFAS worldwide are expected to significantly reduce the use of fluorochemicals.
the problem with PFAS
Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have made convenient eating habits achievable, by making food packaging paper grease-resistant. Society is realizing, however, that PFAS should be handled with care. PFAS are a common class of over 4,700 highly stable, man-made chemicals that do not easily break down after use. As a result, PFAS causes contamination to groundwater and drinking water. [1] Also, PFAS can stay in the body for a long period where they may accumulate with some fluorochemicals that have been linked to negative health effects. [2]
PFAS ban effective
Denmark and the Netherlands are the first countries in Europe with effective PFAS ban in place. Beginning of 2023, the EU Member States of Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden officially submitted a proposal to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) to restrict all per- and polyfluroroalkyl substances across the EU. Depending on the duration of the review process, the introduction of the PFAS ban could take place in 2025/26.
The EU is not alone. In the USA, 12 states have already enacted a PFAS-bans. In California, Maine, New York and Washington State it is already in place. Additionally, there are pending PFAS legislations in minimum eight other US states.
