employee spotlight: 25 years at delfort ‘the voice of our customers’

Juha is one of delfort’s longest-serving employees and an expert in Electrical Insulation Papers. As our EIP papers are set to celebrate their 101st birthday this year, Juha will be celebrating his 25th year at delfort!



In our industry, and for our customers, a long experience and career are a very big plus. Cable projects last for years, and technology changes take decades, so we need people like Juha in the industry to hold the timeline together.


Employees expect their jobs to bring a significant sense of purpose to their lives. Juha has found this sense of purpose by supporting and helping our global EIP clients as a Technical Customer Service Manager at our Tervakoski location in Finland. We sat down with him to learn more about his impact and journey at delfort.

It’s quite common nowadays for people to switch jobs every 3- 5 years, so 25 years at the same company is quite unique. Tell us about your background and how you got started in EIP papers.

 

I started in Tervakoski as a Laboratory Manager in September 1997. After a few years, I was asked to join a two-year EIP project. Fast forward 18 years and I’m still happily working in EIP!

I studied chemistry and environmental research at the Jyväskylä University. After getting my master’s degree in organic chemistry, I worked in research and development for a pulp and paper company and then at a waste treatment plant. I had five different jobs in ten years. It was hard on my family as we were always moving around, and I was traveling a lot. I wanted to find a company where I could feel secure and stable, and where I could have an interesting and long career. That’s when I found delfort.

 

Why do your colleagues and customers appreciate working with someone like you who has been at the company for so long?

 

You become very knowledgeable about the tasks, workflows, and systems at your job. Everyone knows they can count on you. You’ve become a subject matter expert in the eyes of your co-workers. When there’s a question about the job, you are one of the first people to be contacted for help.

There are a lot of 30-50 year old tailor-made specifications, which are still valid. Therefore, it’s important to have someone who knows what has happened in the past and what’s behind customer requirements. Because I have been doing this for so long, I have a deep and holistic understanding of what customers need and how to help them. During the last 20 years, I have built decades of EIP experience. This helps me to anticipate the questions and needs of the customer and to react proactively.

Tervakoski’s top-quality paper is of the highest grade and can be applied in the most demanding high voltage environments. How do you support EIP in your role as a Technical Customer Service Manager? 
 

I always wanted to be in direct contact with customers, I love working with people and solving problems. As a Technical Customer Service Manager, I interact every day with our customers.

Part of my job is to act as an interpreter. I am the voice of our customers. I interpret our customer’s requirements to our production department, and I interpret our production capabilities to our customers. I work as a liaison between our internal departments and businesses, answering their questions and helping them find the best insulation materials for their needs.

I feel like I have a direct and meaningful impact because building long-term relationships with clients is crucial for long-term customer retention and satisfaction.

When not using his vast knowledge and experience to support our customers, Juha enjoys being active and spending time in the outdoors. In the winter he enjoys cross-country skiing. In the summer he enjoys motorcycle rides, running, and his newest hobby frisbee golf.
